Who We Are

Goethe-Institut

The Goethe-Institut is Germany’s cultural institute and the global leader in teaching German as a foreign language. We’ve been teaching German for more than 50 years at our 148 branches in 91 countries and through our youth courses in Germany. Each year more than 170,000 students study German in one of our classes.

We’re also no novices when it comes to soccer. Our most successful youth course in Germany, fully booked months ahead of time, is German Plus Soccer. In this summer camp an international group of young students tackles German in the morning and plays soccer in the afternoon – a wildly popular combination!

Score with German is based on the award-winning “Double Club”, a joint project by one of Europe’s top soccer clubs, Arsenal FC, and the Goethe-Institut. In 2008, “Double Club” received the prestigious European Award for Languages for its innovative approach to developing language skills. This award-winning concept is now coming to the United States.

In the U.S., the Goethe-Institut San Francisco is perfectly suited to coordinate all language and soccer activities. Since 1997 the GI San Francisco has been organizing the Transatlantic Soccer Bridge, a soccer tournament for high school students enrolled in German.  Honorary chairman of the Soccer Bridge is none other than Jürgen Klinsmann (photo), one of Germany’s all-time soccer greats, winner of the 1990 World Cup and former coach of Germany’s national team as well as FC Bayern München. Benefit from our experience — we are the German&Soccer pros!

To make Score with German a resounding success all across the United States, the Goethe-Institut has joined forces with the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). The AATG’s over 5,200 members are dedicated to bringing the language, literatures and cultures of the German-speaking world to all Americans. “Fußball” is a big part of German culture and will ensure that students get a kick out of learning German!

The Goethe-Institut and the AATG have developed grammar and vocabulary exercises, video clips and podcasts that focus entirely on the world of soccer and capture the imagination of young language learners. German teachers and students worldwide can now turn to our webportal “Sprechen Sie Fußball?” where soccer-related teaching materials are made available and constantly updated.

These teaching materials form the basis of the German language curriculum for our German&Soccer summer camps. In these camps (with both residential and day options) student-athletes will learn German the fun way while at the same time improving their soccer skills. We’re convinced that this innovative concept of combining language learning with the sport of soccer will be an instant hit. We’re planning on expanding our camps to regions outside of California in the summer of 2011.

Score with German was only made possible by the generous support of the German Program for Transatlantic Encounters (Transatlantic Program). The Transatlantic Program is financed by European Recovery Program (ERP) funds provided by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor. The purpose of the Transatlantic Program is to keep the memory of the Marshall Plan and General George C. Marshall alive and foster transatlantic partnership in line with his wishes.
